Recording of cardiovascular risk factors is essential. Blood tests should include levels of gonadotrophins (luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)), testosterone level between 9–11am (there is a marked diurnal variation in testosterone levels), sex-hormone-binding globulin level, prolactin level, fasting lipid profile and thyroid function tests. In addition, it is important to check the full blood count (testosterone has a direct effect on bone marrow and red cell production), renal function, blood glucose, liver function test and prostate-specific antigen (PSA).3

Research shows that taking Korean red ginseng can help to improve erectile dysfunction and other symptoms of sexual dysfunction. A detailed medical history, sexual history, and physical exam are warranted to identify causative or reversible factors involved in ED.4 Select laboratory tests (e.g., serum testosterone, serum blood glucose, fasting lipid panel, thyroid-stimulating hormone) may be obtained to identify causative factors of ED. Additionally, a detailed medication history is necessary to identify medications that may be contributing to ED (see TABLE 1).4,5
A meta-analysis of prospective studies evaluated the association between ED and the risk of CVD and all-cause mortality, which had been previously recognised by consensus panels.16,17 Twelve studies involving 36,744 men with no known CVD were included. ED significantly increased the risk of CVD, CAD, stroke and all-cause mortality independently of potentially confounding conventional risk factors (Table 2). Of concern is the substantially increased 10-year risk of a cardiac event in younger men with ED (>7-fold aged 20–40 years, 50-fold aged 40–50 years), for whom a focus for risk reduction is clearly needed.18,19

Even if you’re wary of trying a full-blown male sex toy, don’t be intimidated by small devices that are specifically designed to prevent erectile dysfunction. There are erection rings - little plastic devices that fit snugly at the base of the penis - that help men stay firm. You can’t keep them on for long, but they may be worth trying.
In alternative medicine practices, ginseng is used as an adaptogen to help improve physical and sexual function, boost general vitality, and fight aging. Some research also suggests that ginseng and compounds in the root called ginsenosides may be beneficial for supporting immunity and cognitive function and preventing cancer, diabetes, and other conditions.

Similarly, Mulhall and colleagues found that 20% of men presenting with ED and vascular insufficiency on penile duplex had asymptomatic CVD.23
