What causes ED? There are many causes of impotence both medical and psychological. Often, age is a predominant factor in erectile dysfunction; however, your chronological age is not solely responsible for ED’s development. Men over the age of 40 typically experience ED as the result of inadequate blood flow to the penis, most often due to the narrowing of blood vessels. This can arise due to many causes including:

Some herbal products and supplements can cause side effects or interact with other medicines. Erectile dysfunction is a condition that occurs mostly in men. A man cannot maintain an erect penis during sexual intercourse i.e the penis does not have the firmness required for penetration during intercourse.
Unfortunately, many men are reluctant to report erectile dysfunction (ED) to their partner, or physician, due to social stigmas associated with bedroom performance. ED, or the inability to maintain an erection, is much more common than the general population may realize and has a lot to do with men’s health. A Johns Hopkins study revealed that over 18 million men in the U.S. over the age of 20 experience difficulties having and maintaining an erection.

The majority of patients with hypogonadism have non-specific symptoms such as fatigue and weakness, and around 60% of them present with ED and/or loss of libido.3 These patients are consequently at increased risk of osteoporosis, anaemia and cardiovascular disease.5 Diagnosis is confirmed by demonstrating low total and free testosterone levels together with inappropriately low LH and FSH levels. Erectile dysfunction tablets are typically safe to use both in the short term and long term. The results of a study looking at men using sildenafil over the course of four years suggest that it’s safe and effective when used over a prolonged period of time. Likewise, another study involving 1173 men with ED concluded that tadalafil was “safe and well tolerated” when used for the duration of the study, which lasted for two years. In general, if you find yourself taking sildenafil - or any other ED treatment - for a prolonged period of time, it’s worth looking at the underlying causes (with the help of your doctor). There’s also plenty of information on the possible root causes of ED in our Book of Erections.
Side effects with tadalafil are about as common as with sildenafil and are similarly mild. Dose for dose, tadalafil is also a little bit more expensive than sildenafil. In our opinion, tadalafil is the better value, however: In studies, men and their partners prefer tadalafil to sildenafil. Tadalafil has superior psychological outcomes to sildenafil, providing more sexual confidence. The larger window for sexual activity (18-36 hours, compared to 4-6 hours with sildenafil) for many people justifies the slightly higher expense.
